How to Measure for a Blind

Once you’ve decided on the perfect window covering, accurate measurements are essential to ensure your blinds fit beautifully and enhance your home or outdoor space. There are a few key details to keep in mind when measuring.

Blinds can be mounted in two ways: inside the window frame or outside it.

Inside the window frame (Recess Fix):

Recommended for a clean, built-in look. This option allows you to layer other window coverings, such as draperies, over the blind.

Outside the window frame (Face Fix / Wall Mounted):

Ideal for making a window appear wider or taller, hiding unattractive windows, or accommodating windows that are slightly off square.

Top Tip

When using an inside mount, first measure to make sure the frame is deep enough to accommodate the hanging hardware.

When measuring:

  1. Use a steel measuring tape and measure to the nearest 1/8-inch — don’t round your measurements.

  2. Label your measurements clearly: mark the width with a “W” and the height with an “H”. Always put the width first (W x H).

  3. Provide the exact window size. Unless specifically instructed, do not deduct for the mounting brackets or headrail, as the factory will make the necessary adjustments.

Following these steps ensures your blinds fit perfectly and look their best.

Outside Mount Blinds (facefix)

When measuring for outside mount horizontal blinds, start by measuring the window’s width. Then, if possible, add at least 3 inches to each side to ensure you’re covering the light gap and to maximize privacy. Then measure the window’s height and add at least 2.5 inches to allow the space for mounting brackets and overlap at the bottom of the blind.

Inside Mount Blinds (recess)

Once you’ve determined your frame is deep enough for the hardware, take three measurements, one at the top of the window one in the middle and one at the bottom. Use the narrowest width as your measurement. For the height, measure left, right and center, and record the tallest height.
